Optometry need to play larger role detection prevention and management of diabetes on 14th November ( World Diabetic Day )
Optometrists understand linkage of obesity with diabetes which can present as diabetic retinopathy and ultimately may lead to blindness .
Diabetes is not a challenge, Key lies in early detection , prevention and advising those at risk with simple steps for an active lifestyle with an objective to control blood glucose levels.
Walking , exercising, eating food which is low on glycemic index and sodium and high on calcium , magnesium , protein and fibres will help in controlling glucose level and ultimately regress diabetic retinopathy.
Eggs ,sea food ,soya ,tofu , oats ,dalai chia seeds , curds , yogurts, berries , plums , brown rice , bitter lemon , nuts and seeds are excellent food for diabetics .
In india DR is mostly diagnosed when it becomes sight threatening and has poor prognosis. Optometrist being primary eye care provider and being the first point of contact need to be involved in identification ,prevention and control of diabetes identify proliferative diabetic retinopathy and should refer these conditions to Ophthalmologists.
